I believe the best science and outcomes for our natural resources require everyone’s contributions.

  • I am committed to personal research, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration practices that foster inclusion of a diversity of students, researchers, water resource managers, and community members in freshwater ecology and ecological forecasting. I especially strive to include those from traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM and people with disabilities. I listen to and promote the expertise of others. I recognize that valuable knowledge can arise from a variety of experiences outside of academic training in STEM.

  • I am committed to conducting open, equitable science, including using FAIR data practices, in support of improving the accessibility of data, models, and educational materials for people from diverse backgrounds. I consider proper attribution and documentation of data sources, model and code provenance, and ideas and frameworks to be critically important to conducting open, equitable science. I demonstrate my commitment to open, equitable science through:

    1. Publication of all data I collect through the Environmental Data Initiative (see my CV for a list of data publications).

    2. Providing all code for educational modules, models, and forecasts I develop as open-source resources on my GitHub and with a DOI on Zenodo.

    3. Participation in the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON), a global grassroots network of lake researchers that promotes data sharing to facilitate global synthesis and understanding of lake ecosystems.

    4. Development of reproducible analyses and workflows for all coding, modeling, and forecasting projects.

    5. Early and frequent discussions with collaborators about intellectual contributions to projects and product authorship, with careful consideration to include and recognize ALL contributors to a project, regardless of career stage, academic discipline, or whether a person works in academia.

  • I am committed to learning and applying universal design for learning and inclusive pedagogy. Below is a list of activities I am participating in or have recently completed to demonstrate this commitment:

Spring 2024 - online course on Universal Design for Learning 101

Fall 2023 - Universal Design for Learning Workshop at Virginia Tech

Spring 2022 - online courses on Inclusive Pedagogy: Why Student Identities Matter and Universal Design for Learning

Spring 2022 - Advancing Diversity Gathering at Virginia Tech
